What is a Crafoord Artery Forceps?

The Crafoord Artery Forceps is a world-famous cardiovascular clamp named after the Swedish surgeon Clarence Crafoord, who pioneered surgery for aortic coarctation.

It is NOT a normal hemostat. It is a heavy-duty vascular clamp designed to occlude the aorta and large arteries safely during open-heart and thoracic surgery. Its jaws are designed to be atraumatic – they hold the vessel firmly enough to stop blood flow but gently enough to not crush the vessel wall.

It features a distinctive strong, slightly curved jaw with fine DeBakey-style serrations and a long handle for reaching deep into the chest cavity.
